Colonel Deems came from a family rich in military history. His Great grandfather served with the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. His grandfather was an officer in the War of 1812. His father was a Union general during the Civil War. Colonel Deems was a graduate of West Point (class of 1874). He was an officer of the Coast Artillery, and was still on active duty when his son, Clarence Jr. was commisioned as second lieutenant in 1900 (he was also a West Point graduate).
