David Lee Higgs, 80, of Windsor, Missouri, died November 23, 2017, at his home in Windsor, surrounded by his close family.
David was born October 8, 1937 in Windsor, Missouri, to Lee and Sylvia (Symonds) Higgs. He attended Calhoun High School, graduating in 1955. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as a mechanic both in the U.S. and abroad. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Missouri and entered Mechanic Trade School and obtained employment with Ford Motor Company in Kansas City.
David married Bonnie Sue Eldred on July 2, 1960 in Calhoun, Mo. They made their home in Blue Springs, Mo., until returning to the Windsor area where they began farming, raising cattle and row crops. At the farm they raised their daughter Lisa and son Michael and enjoyed activities with their grandson Carter. With failing health, David and Bonnie moved from the farm to Windsor in February 2017 where he resided for the remainder of his life.
David spent several years employed as a mechanic at Peabody Coal Company near Calhoun until they ceased operating at that location. He then owned and operated a trucking company and hauled over much of the U.S. for 7 years. Upon discontinuation of his trucking enterprise he continued living at the farm and thoroughly enjoyed raising cattle. Two of David's favorite things were Ford vehicles and Allis Chalmers tractors.
David was a member of the Windsor First Baptist Church. He was also a 50 year member of the Windsor Masonic Lodge and a 49 year member of the Kansas City Scottish Rite.
David is survived by his wife Bonnie of the home; a daughter, Lisa, a grandson, Carter, and two brothers, Ed and Bill. He is also survived by a close friend Jake Drenon and his family. David was very close to Bonnie's extended family and is fondly remembered by his numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. David was loved as a brother by Bonnie's four younger sisters. David had the highest regard for Bonnie's mother, Elaine, who never failed to have an apple pie for him. David was preceded in death by his parents and his son Michael Higgs.
