Edwin "Ed" Dupree - Obituary

Edwin "Ed" Dupree, 76, of Faith, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.

He was born May 18, 1941 in Greensboro, NC to the late Edwin Harrington and Shirley Robertson Dupree. Ed attended China Grove High School and graduated from the Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany in 1959.

Ed was a very active member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

He majored in Journalism at UNC Chapel Hill where he was the Sports Editor and Sports Writer of the Daily Tarheel. Ed had Sports Writer jobs at the Winston Salem Journal, Morganton News Herald, and Thomasville Times before coming to the Salisbury Post in 1966 where he worked until his retirement in 1996. After retirement Ed did some freelance journalism in various golf publications including the North Carolina Golf Panel. He was awarded many NC Press Association Sports Writing Awards, and was inducted into the Rowan County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 when he won the Horace Billing Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ed was an avid runner, he started running track in high school, and was a member of the UNC Track Team his freshman year. Ed organized and coached the Faith Flyers Track Club from 1974-1986, producing many State and National Champions. He helped his daughter Allison coach the Erwin Middle School 7th & 8th Grade Girls Basketball Teams from 2001-2013. Together they coached over 350 games capturing 279 wins, and sent several players onto Division 1 & 2 College Women's Basketball Teams.

At some point in 1992 Ed began to keep a record of his daily running routine which consisted of running at least 1 mile a day. His streak ended on September 12, 2017 after 21,957 miles, 24 years and 82 days ranking him 82nd in the United States Running Streak Association. Over the course of his life he recorded running a total of 41,093.5 miles, completing 13 marathons, and ran at least 1 mile in every county in the state of North Carolina.

In recent years Ed was on a quest to finishing playing every golf course in the State of North Carolina, playing on over 600 and having less than 30 remaining.

In addition to his parents, Edwin was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Dupree.

Edwin is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Bitsy Dupree, whom he married April 10, 1964; son, Brett Dupree and wife Maggie of Charlotte; daughter, Allison Adams and husband Frank Adams III of Granite Quarry; and two Grandsons, Frank Adams IV, and Drew Adams.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Saturday, November 25, 2017, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 26, 2017, in the Shiloh United Methodist Church, Granite Quarry, NC with Rev. David Miner officiating. Burial will follow in the Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery.

It seemed the moment the ball hit the ground, we had a team that came from all over the mill hill. With the fondest childhood memories, I remember Ed, David Abernathy, Ray & Clay Thomas, my brother, Paul Anthony and I played basketball behind our house. Yes, I was the only 12 or 13 year old girl that these guys would allow to play. They were all a year or two older than me and I learned so much from them. I was so proud of Ed when reading his sports article in the Salisbury Post. Just knowing that I knew him when he played in our backyard. With great childhood memories in China Grove.
