Wayne Stone, 95, of Mitchell, SD died Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Mitchell. Burial will be Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Monday at Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Wayne Edward Stone was born October 19, 1922, at Boliver, MO, to George E. and Mary (Snitker) Stone. He was raised in Mitchell where he attended Litchfield Elementary School, Mitchell Junior High School and graduated from Mitchell Senior High School in 1941. He excelled in athletics and was a two time All-State and All ESD basketball player and member of the 1940 state championship and 1941 ESD championship teams. He attended DWU and was the starting guard on the Wesleyan Basketball Team in the 41-42 and 42 and 43 seasons.
He enlisted in the US Army in April of 1943 and served as a tank commander in the 25rd Calvary Reconnisance Squadron of the 4th Armored Division 3rd Army under General George Patton in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. During the occupation after the war, Wayne was a starting guard for the 4th Armoured Division AABasketball Team in Germany in 45-46 where his team was defeated in the finals of the Tournament by the 1st infantry (The Big Red). He was discharged from the army in May of 1946, returning home to Mitchell and DWU. He was the second baseman for the Mitchell Basin League Baseball Team from 1946-1950. He played quarterback and was the punter for the DWU Football Team as well as a guard on the 47-48 and 48-49 Wesleyan basketball teams. He was honored by being named DWU’s Outstanding Athlete in1949. He graduated from DWU in 1949 and became a teacher and head basketball coach at Emery in 1949-50. His Emery team won the So. Dak. State B Championship in 1950, the first in the school’s history. In the 1950-51 school year, he was named head basketball coach at Mitchell High by then athletic director and his former high school coach, Joe Quintal. He coached the Kernels for the next six seasons leaving in 1956 to go to work for S&H Green Stamps. He was with the company for 27 years retiring in Salt Lake City, UT in 1983.
On August 18, 1951, he married Myrna Nepstad in Mitchell and had one son Jeff in 1953. During his employment with S&H, he lived in Bismark, ND, Minneapolis, MN, and Salt Lake City, UT.
In 1994 he was named to the DWU Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was in the inaugural class of inductees in the Mitchell High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he was inducted into the South Dakota State High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Wayne was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler and golfer and participated in a number of National Bowling Tournaments and won the Mitchell City Singles Championship in 59-60. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, member of the VFW and American Legion, former member of the Masonic Lodge and former Shrine member of Salt Lake City. He was past president of the Men’s Bowling Association, member of the USGA and former member of the Mitchell Golf Association. He was also a member of the Mitchell Area Historical Society and Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry.
He is survived by his wife Myrna, a son Jeff Stone of Spokane, WA, a grandson, Andrew Stone of Spokane, WA, granddaughters, Lindsay (Cory) Davis of Spokane, WA and Aubrey Strong of Spokane, WA and a great grandson, Holbie Bronson of Spokane, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Earl and Clayton and sisters Dorothy and Helen.
