EDITH ORA (MITCHELL) (McAFEE) POWELL
(January 16, 1923 ~ November 21, 2017)

Edith Ora Mitchell, 94, was born in a rural home near Mt. Zion Community which is southeast of Valliant, Oklahoma on January 16, 1923, the daughter of William R. Mitchell and Minnie Lee (Roberts) Mitchell. She could not wait to begin her life in McCurtain County, so she was born several weeks premature and only weighed 2 1/2 lbs. She often told how she survived by being wrapped in a small blanket, placed in a shoebox, surrounded by quart jars of warm water and cozy blankets and kept warm by the wood~fired kitchen oven. At that time, there was no electricity nor any gas.

She grew into a healthy child, the youngest of six surviving siblings. She had 3 brothers and 2 sisters who were Willie Mitchell, Edgar Mitchell, Alma Bain, Raymon Mitchell and Gladys Snell.

She attended Mt. Zion School Grade school for eight years and went on to Valliant High School. She graduated at Valliant High School in 1939. At the age of 16, she went to college in Durant with her sister, Gladys. She earned a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's Degree in Elementary Education.

Edith began her teaching career at Mt. Zion Grade School in 1942, and she taught for 42 years, mostly in Valliant Oklahoma and mostly the third grade. She retired 34 years ago.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 60 years and sang in the choir many of those years. She was married to William A. McAfee for 27 years. He was a Vocational Agriculture instructor. Later she married Joe T. Powell, a school administrator, and he preceded her in death in 2002.

Edith loved her garden, flowers, recipes and mostly visiting with her many friends. She was respected by her fellow teachers and fondly remembered by her many students.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, all siblings, a nephew, Jack Mitchell Bain from Idabel, OK and possibly by nephew and niece, Ralph Mitchell and Patricia Mitchell (Willie Mitchell's children...family lost contact).

Edith is survived by her son, Dr. William Mitchell McAfee and his wife Mary Ann; grandson, Christopher McAfee; nieces and nephews, Bill Bain of Valliant, OK, Dorothy (Mitchell) Canary of Newcastle, OK, Carolyn (Mitchell) Johnson of Avinger, Texas, Stan Snell of Fort Mills, SC, Edith Karen "Edie" (Snell) Thurmond of Oklahoma City, OK, Billy Mitchell of Ft. Smith, AR.

She is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews; including Jan (Canary) Talkington, Eddy Canary, Jacksy (Bain) Walker, Jia (Bain) Johnson, Barth Bain, Lee Ann (Bain) Baetz, Brad Bain, Shane Mitchell, Ashley (Thurmond) Warren, Roger C. Thurmond II, Jennifer (Snell) George, Dr. Christopher Andrew Snell; and her many students and friends.

Edith (Mitchell) (McAfee) Powell passed away the evening of November 21, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease and will be memorialized in her beloved First Baptist Church in Valliant Oklahoma and laid to rest beside her second husband in the Valliant Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Carl Abbott, Brad Bain, Jerry Ellis, Joey Blackard, Barth Bain and Carroll Howard.
