Ruth Eleanor Coburn
Ruth Eleanor Coburn, 95, of Alamogordo passed away Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Mountain View Medical Center in Las Cruces. Ruth was born October 4, 1915 on the family farm west of Clinton, Indiana, the oldest of four children of Howard Ross Clover and Nora Naomi Ford.
She attended grammar school in Centenary, east of the farm, and attended Clinton High School, were she met her future husband, Clyde W. Coburn, while playing saxophone in the high school orchestra. After graduation in 1933, she attended secretarial school in Chicago while Clyde pursued a degree in music education at Indiana State Teachers College.
After his graduation, they were married on the family farm September 3, 1939 and moved to Steeleville, Illinois, where Clyde began teaching.
He was drafted into service in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942, and Ruth followed him whenever possible during his service with various AAF bands. Ruth returned to Clinton to await the birth of their first son, Clyde William Coburn II, before eventually rejoining her husband. Upon Clyde's discharge from military service, the Coburns returned to Illinois where their second son, Robert Howard Coburn, was born before moving back to Indiana, where they lived for eight years. Ruth continued in her role of homemaker and became a Cub Scout den mother when her boys became Cub Scouts.
The Coburns moved from Indiana to Alamogordo in 1957. Clyde began teaching junior high school band, and Ruth began working as a secretary in the public schools from which she retired in 1977.
For a decade following their retirement, Clyde and Ruth traveled extensively in their Airstream trailer, visiting family and friends and spending much of their time visiting historical and archaeological sites, and state and national parks. They joined a Wally Byam Airstream Caravan to the Yucatan Peninsula, and later traveled to Mt. McKinley, AK.
Ruth was very active in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which she and Clyde helped build, for almost fifty years. She served her church as deaconess, accompanist, choir member, board secretary and president of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was also active in P.E.O. and had been active in the Order of the Eastern Star before moving to New Mexico. She was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed watching Indy 500 races during Memorial Day weekend every year.
Ruth is survived by sons, Bill and his wife, Gail, of Westmoreland, NM and Robert and his wife, Clayton, of High Rolls, NM. She is also survived by sisters Helen Ahlemeyer of Indianapolis, IN and Lucille McDonald of Evansville, IN. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Clyde and her brother Clover of Paris, IL.
A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to First Christian Church.
