Sara Ann Hammond died on September 22. 2017. The daughter of Clyde Huel and Mary Veasey Putnam, she was born in and grew up in Phenix City, Alabama. In 1951, she married Lyman Hammond, an Army Officer, at Fort Benning, Georgia. There she had a son Hutch, and a daughter, Ann.
Thus began her life as an outstanding Army wife and exceptional mother, moving from location to location. Mostly fun, she also endured three 13-month hardship tours by her military husband twice to Korea and then to Vietnam, always managing to hold down the fort at home. Sara Ann was always a very active volunteer at each of their duty stations including Red Cross Nurses Aid, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. In each location, she held the honor of being president of the Wives Clubs.
In 1979, she and her husband, Lyman, moved to Virginia Beach. While in Virginia Beach Sara Ann became president of the Bay Colony Garden Club, was active in the Virginia Beach Garden Club holding nearly every position in that organization. She was active in the NATO Book Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Princess Anne Country Club. Most notably, she loved and was loved by so many friends.
Sara Ann is survived by her husband Lyman, married for 66 years; a son, Hutch Hammond and his wife Lynn; a daughter, Ann and her husband, Wesley Page. She is also survived by a grandson, Mark Sawyer and his wife Jackie; and blessed by a great granddaughter, Emma Page Sawyer.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach at 300 36th St., Virginia Beach, 23451, on Monday October 2, 2017 at 1:30pm.
