Actor. He was a character actor who was known for his performances on the theatrical stage, in film, and on television during a career that span eight decades. His best known role was of Cliff Huxtable's father Russell on the 1980s NBC sitcom "The Cosby Show". He made his Broadway debut in 1943 as a teenager in the play "Run, Little Chillun" and continued performing on the theatrical stage for the most of his career. He made his film debut in the 1945 film "The Lost Weekend" and would go on to perform in such films as "The Bamboo Prison" (1954), "Afrikaneren" (1966), "The Possession of Joel Delaney" (1972), and "Fighting Back" (1982). He made his television debut in 1954 on the series "Look Up and Live". Besides "The Cosby Show, he would go on to perform in such series as "The United States Steel Hour", "Espionage", "The Doctors and the Nurses", "The Defenders", "All My Children", The Edge of Night", "Madigan", "A Different World", "A Man Called Hawk", "Cosby", and "Twice in a Lifetime". He also did voicework for several animated series such as "Thundercats" and "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus". During his career, he received several award nominations and won a CableACE award in 1982 for his performance in the television movie "Long Day's Journey Into Night".
