James Ottis Barnes, usually known to his friends, as "J. O." died this
morning at his at his West Park home of a heart attack. Mr. Barnes had been in ill health since suffering a stroke seven years ago, but had been following his usual routine yesterday.
He was born January 23, 1982 in Cherryvale. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Henry Barnes. His father died when he was nine years old. His mother and her family moved to a farm south of Spearville where he was reared. He married Miss Ella Rose Berry here May 3, 1910 and they made their home here.
Mr. Barnes worked for the Santa Fe for several years, later with the
Dodge City Flour Mills where he became second miller, then, until his
health was impaired as Dodge City Junior High School custodian He was esteemed by all who knew him.
Survivors are the widow four sons, Kenneth of Portland, Ore., Cecil and Dale of Dodge City and Clinton of Corvallis, Ore.; a Mrs. Earl Haskell of Minneola; two brothers, Riley and Orville, local residents, 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The Rev. Alvin W. Murray will conduct the funeral at 2 p. m. Tuesday in the Hulpieu-Swaim Chapel. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Methodist Church.
