Jimmie B. Davenport, 87, of Newberry, died Friday, November 17, 2017.

Born on September 24, 1930 in Newberry, SC, he was a son of the late James Palman Davenport and Minnie Atkins Davenport.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Jimmie worked as the Newberry County Tax Assessor for more than thirty years. In 1996, he was inducted as an Honorary Lifetime Member into the SC Association of Assessing Officials. He was also a Lifetime Member of Amity Masonic Lodge #87, was Bubba’s most loyal customer and an avid Gamecock Fan.

Jimmie “JD” Davenport loved life and lived it to the fullest…”He did it My way.”

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gay Bowers Davenport; daughters, Kim Davenport Sligh (Frank) and Lisa Davenport Shaw (Lee) all of Newberry; grandchildren, Jessica Folk Brannon (Tracen), Jimmie Lee Shaw (Katie), Tabitha Shaw Harmon (David), Carey Sligh and Derek Sligh; great grandchildren, Trae, Kaden and Jakob Brannon, Ellie and Liza Shaw and Campbell Harmon; and brother, Johnnie R. Davenport, Sun City, SC.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Edna Phillips, Gladys Kirby, Robert “Cotton” Davis, Olin Davenport, Mad Davenport, Hattie Hendrix, Hazel Glenn, Mildred Guing and Verona Johnson.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College St., Newberry.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, November 20, 2017 at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Surrett and the Rev. James Williams. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jimmie Lee Shaw, Carey Sligh, Derek Sligh, Tracen Brannon, David Harmon, and Mike Graham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carrie Ellis and Angel Care “Angels”.
