US Congressman, Lawyer, Entrepreneur. He was a United States Representative from the State of Iowa. He was born one of four children as Bernhart Henn II to Bernhart Henn I (1778-1825), and his wife Ann Hudson Henn (1779-1852), in Cherry Valley, New York, on September 10, 1817. He was baptized on March 17, 1820. He was educated locally and attended the local common public schools. He then moved to Burlington, Iowa, in 1838, and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in Burlington, Iowa, shortly thereafter, and then relocated to Fairfield, Iowa, where he took an interest in politics and was personally appointed by then-President of the United States James Knox Polk (1795-1849), to be the Register of the United States Land Office in 1845. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Daniel Fry Miller (1814-1895), on March 4, 1851. He was originally elected in 1850, and during this time he was officially considered a Democrat, but a hostile editor of the first Burlington, Iowa, the "Hawk-Eye" newspaper named James G. Edwards labeled him a "Locofoco," which was a slang term for a radical faction of the Party. He then ran and won reelection in 1852. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Iowa's 1st District (Thirty-Second Congress and Thirty-Third Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1851, to March 3, 1855. During this time while serving in the United States Congress, he also tried and failed to win the election to serve as a Member of the Iowa General Assembly to the United States Senate losing to United States Senator James Harlan (1820-1899), in 1854. Following his term in the United States Congress, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Augustus Hall (1814-1861), on March 4, 1855. After leaving the United States Congress, he became involved in banking pursuits and real estate endeavours. He continued in both banking and real estate until his death. He passed away at his residence Henn Mansion in Fairfield, Iowa, on August 30, 1865, at the age of 47. Following his death, he was buried under the shade of a tree in Old Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa, in Lot 100, but he was later reburied in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa, in Plot Old P.292. He was married to Elizabeth S. Price Henn (1820-1895), on August 6, 1841, and the couple had six children together including, Mary Josephine Henn Hufford (1842-1898), Anna Henn (1843-1876), Clara Henn (1846-1847), Edward P. Henn (1848-1881), and Katherine and Bernhart. His wife Elizabeth passed away on August 8, 1895, at the age of 75, and she was buried with her husband in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa. His former home, the Henn Mansion located in Fairfield, Iowa, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
