Dr. Julia A. Capps died peacefully on the morning of November 16, 2017.

She is predeceased by her father and mother, Richard Clingman Capps and Nell Kent Capps and brothers, Richard Lee and Clingman Carter Capps.

She had a very meaningful life as an educator, daughter, family member, church member and community organizer. On the many boards she was a member of, she was a forthright participant. She especially enjoyed her years teaching English at Lee Edwards High School (now, Asheville High School), was a stalwart as an Associate Superintendent in the Asheville City Schools and was especially pleased to participate in the educational progress of its students.

Julia was a graduate of Appalachian State University earning her Bachelors and Masters degrees. She later earned her doctorate at Duke University.

She was a valued member of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder. As a choir member, her lovely soprano voice was appreciated by all.

Julia is survived by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The family extends its gratitude to the caregivers who lightened the burden of her extended illness.

A memorial service to honor Julia’s life will be held Monday, November 20, 2017 at 2:00pm at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.
