Bill was born on September 16, 1916 in Ahmeek to Louis and Genevieve Butkovich, and attended Calumet High School. He worked in a CCC Camp from 1936 to 1938.
On August 24, 1940 he married the former Ruth E. Biekkola in Mohawk.
William was employed as a butcher for Quality Market in Laurium, as a copper miner at Calumet Hecla Mining Company, and Calumet Public Schools from 1973 to 1983 as a custodian. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Calumet. He was a loving and kind father, grandfather and father-in-law. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and did excellent carpentry work. He loved to work in his vegetable and flower gardens and he loved to polka.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth of 54 years of marriage; she passed away on January 14, 1994. Also preceding him in death are an infant son Donald Francis, his parents, sisters Ann Stiglich and Florence Mihelcich, and brothers Ernie, Albert and Frank.
Surviving are daughters Dianne (Ted) Johnson of Hancock and Laurel (Mike) Bessolo of Calumet; sons David (Pat) Butkovich of Ocoee, Florida and Bruce (Mary) Butkovich of Point Lookout, Michigan; brother Alex Butkovich of Copper City; sister Mary (George) Pastilla of California; 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held March 17, 2003 at Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet with the Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate.
