Jimmie grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from Lincoln High School before graduating from Iowa State University. He taught school in Missouri and Iowa before working at Goodwill Industries in Des Moines.
He was married for a short time. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brother-in-law, Dennis Altenberg. Survivors include his siblings, Larry Stephens of Leon, Iowa, Ron Stephens of Norwalk, Iowa, Mary Altenberg of Des Moines, Iowa, and Nancy Cook and husband, Jim, of Hugo, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
