Robert R. "Bob" Metcalf, 65, of Chelsea, Ala., a former resident of Scranton and Dallas, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Compassus Hospice Birmingham, Ala., with his loving family at his side.

Bob is survived by his wife, Joan Pechal Metcalf; and daughter, Katherine. Also surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth J. Ward and husband, Dennis, of Ephrata, Pa.; and Marsha Phillips and husband, Willard, of Fairfax Station, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Marsh and Mary Teresa Burns Metcalf, of Scranton, Pa.

Bob was born on Feb. 26, 1952, in Scranton, Pa., to Roy and Mary Metcalf. He graduated from South Scranton Catholic High School in 1970 and the University of Scranton in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in marketing. At the time of his death, Bob was a reserve specialist with Federal Emergency Management Agency " FEMA." He retired in 2013 from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. While working for this agency, he was an agent for the Randolph Shepard Act, in Harrisburg, Pa., and for over 20 years worked in the skilled nursing home division in the Lackawanna County Assistance Office in Scranton, Pa.

Bob was an accomplished golfer with an unforgettable golf swing. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and friend who enjoyed making everyone laugh. In accordance with his wishes, Bob has been cremated.

A funeral Mass celebrating Bob's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 18, at Nativity of Our Lord Church at St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard St., Scranton, PA 18505, celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor, immediately followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 8:45 to 9:45 at the church before the Mass.

Joan and Katherine,please accept my deepest sympathy on Bob's passing. He was an excellent member of our staff at the CAO. His kindness and understanding went a long way to ease the pain of family members that were faced with placing a family member in a nursing home. RIP my friend !

Bob was such a kind, honest and gentle person. He was low spoken and always upbeat. I sat next to him for years at the CAO and enjoyed his company. I will miss him as we corresponded on Facebook. God bless you and Katie.
