He marriedJane Hunter September 1860 in Ironville, Blair County, and fathered Martha Ellen(aka Ella M.) (b. 05/13/64) and Harry (b. 06/06/66). He stood 6' 2" tall and had auburn hair and black eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Tyrone,
Blair County, August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 10 as a private with Co. A, 125th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal, date unknown, and honorably discharged with his company May 18, 1863. He is listed in the company register as "Boughamer." He then enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 4 as a corporal with Co. C, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. His surname is spelled "Buchamer" in Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Buchhammer" in the company descriptive list, "Boughammer" in his pension index, and indexed as"Bonghammer" in Fold3.com. He died at Boiling Spring Run
