Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Guadalupe Mountain Christian Camp Church in Queen for Darrell Franklin Young of Lovington.
Young, 63, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at his home in Queen.
Paul Trone will officiate the services, with interment to follow at the Queen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Guadalupe Mountain Christian Camp Church.
Darrell was born Feb. 12, 1954, in Silverton, Texas, to Edward F. and Edna Mae (Pond) Young. He grew up in Truth or Consequences until age 13, then moved with his family to the Sacramento Mountains. He graduated from Weed High School.
Darrell worked various jobs through the years, such as carpentry, plumbing and construction, and was considered a “jack of all trades.” He was also the camp ranger for Camp Wheinnipay.
On Dec. 8, 1972, he married Carol Wilson in Sacramento, and in 1980, the couple moved to Lovington, where Darrell was self-employed and worked in the oilfield. In later years, he was employed with and retired from Phillips Petroleum.
Darrell enjoyed hunting, fishing, and joking with his family and friends, but his passion was his family. He loved his wife, daughters and grandchildren, and was given the nickname of “Popeye.” His family and friends alike called him by his nickname. He was a giver and an encourager for his girls, teaching them that they could do anything a guy could do, whether it was changing a tire or checking the oil, painting, or anything else.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington. Condolences may be expressed online at www.kirbysmithrogers.
