CREVE COEUR ~ Karla Anderson, 48, of Creve Coeur, passed over into God's kingdom at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017, surrounded by family and friends after a seven year battle with cancer.

She leaves behind Kenneth Vaughn and Jess Burns, both a part of her life as father figures; a loving husband, Galen Anderson; two furry children, Snickers and Remington; two brothers, Kevin (Karen) Vaughn of Creve Coeur and Keith Vaughn of Pekin; one sister, Kristina J. Brewer of Peoria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Karla was preceded in death by her mother, Shiree Burns.

Karla was born on May 13, 1969 and grew up loving education and puppy dogs. Both of these traits followed her throughout her entire life.

She met Galen and they were married on September 27, 2003. He survives.

Karla's education took her to Illinois Central College, Bradley University and Illinois State University, where she worked hard and received two Bachelor's degrees and a Master's degree. Karla was President of her Tri Sigma Sorority while at ISU. She then went to Chicago to begin law school, but due to her mother’s illness, she chose to come home and help take care of her. Well after being diagnosed with her illness, Karla also earned a degree in Medical Coding.

Karla was a member of the Peoria Junior Women's Club for over 20 years and held several offices within the organization including Secretary, Treasurer, Chapter President and District Secretary.

Karla was also involved in her community by being an education advocate for disadvantaged children. Her latest involvement was with a reading program at a local school through her work at Costco, where she was a Membership Marketing Manager.

Karla loved to travel and did so on a regular basis, whether it was with her husband or with friends. There was hardly a place that she wasn't able to go.

Karla had a great demeanor and greeted everyone with a smile and welcomed them with a loving attitude. Karla never allowed her illness to be an excuse, but instead, used it as a constant reminder that life is precious and short, and to use your time wisely to help and to serve others. From her husband's perspective Karla was a great lady of which there is no equal. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor John Plunkett will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Kickapoo.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Tazewell Animal Protective Society at 100 Taps Ln. Pekin, IL 61554.
