The son of James N. & Elizabeth (Herman) Pittenturf, in 1860 he 2as a coach maker living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service there that November as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). On December 3, 1862, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He was drafted again, this time mustering into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged with his company July 10, 1865.

He married Margaret E. Shank and fathered William Anderson (b. 06/11/66). He died at home from a "hemorrhage of brain" as he picked up an ax preparing to chop wood.
