Simpson operated a tavern or inn and a stable for mail carriers to change horses. Appointed U.S. Postmaster in Jasper County, Texas, from March 15, 1858 to May 19, 1859. In 1869, while in route to Williamson County, Texas, he became ill and died in Whitehall Community, south of Navasota, in Grimes County, Texas.

Simpson and Mary Mangrum had seven children. Burial information for a son (1825-1830), Louisa (1834), and Mary Beaty (1837) is unknown.

Simpson and Mary Webb had two children. Only information regarding Mary Catherine is she was born June 10, 1853 and died a few years later. Burial unknown.

Simpson and Martha Moody had four children. Burial information for Alice (1860), William (1863), and Benjamin (1865) is unknown. Benjamin died young near Navasota, Texas in a cotton gin accident.
