Rev. Clifford Allen Green, 90, succumbed to many ills on November 15, 2017 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA. He was born in Mason City Iowa on December 6, 1926 to Avis Fay (West) and Douglas A. Green while the house next door burned down in raging fire. He was the oldest of three—Robert, who predeceased him in death, and Virginia Ryan of Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, Willene (Winchell) Miller-Green, for whom he thanked God everyday. Cliff is also survived by three children: Edward Allen Green (Diane) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Herb Green of Sanford, FL; and Joan Barrington (Mark) from Plymouth, MA. He has four grandchildren: Erika Barrington of Philadelphia PA, Wesley Barrington of New London CT, Mitchell Allen Barrington of Plymouth MA, and Trevor Barrington of Hoboken NJ.

Cliff was an eternal optimist whose greatest joy in life was serving the Lord. After graduating seminary schools—Christian Missionary Alliance Institute, Nyack, NY (1950); Trinity College, Chicago IL (1957)—he ministered several churches in Nebraska, before returning to Des Moines where he continued to serve as an Interim Minister throughout Iowa and lead Adult Sunday School classes and various committees at First Baptist Church in Downtown Des Moines, now of Johnston, where he maintained church membership.

Cliff’s infectious smiles and jokes flew across the counter where he greeted customers at his business, Action Printers, 5th &Keo, downtown Des Moines, from 1969-1981 and later at 3010 East 14th until 1986. He was known to offer his products at low-or-no margin(s) to non-profits organizations.

Organizations like the Des Moines Kiwanis, North Des Moines Business Association., and Bethel Mission were but a few of many Cliff served as President or tireless Ad Seller. He was devoted to causes in East Des Moines and at East High School where he earned letters in wrestling, football, and track, serving many terms as President of the EHS Athletic Boosters. Cliff never worried about giving more than he received.

Cliff was proud that he was never unemployed, whether working for someone else—selling insurance, office machines, pharmaceuticals, or driving post office semi-trailer trucks, or being entrepreneurial—devising a truck he purchased for $25 to carry cement forms for $100, repairing typewriters, and especially performing any size carpentry, home repair or remodeling project of the highest quality. He ended his career selling real estate with Iowa Realty well into his 70’s.

He served in our nation’s military from June 22, 1945-November 1946 as an MP. He said he was never proud of his service until he took the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and a survivor from the front lines during WWII told him that his job was important; all support positions mattered greatly.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, 8250 N.W. 62nd Ave., Johnston, IA 50131.
