Sandra Joy (Gross) Sayler, daughter of William and Emily (Johnson) Gross, was born on Nov. 23, 1943 in Freeman, SD. Sandra passed away peacefully, after saying goodbye to her family and other loved ones two weeks before her 74th birthday, Nov. 11, 2017.

She was baptized on Jan. 21, 1944 and confirmed on May 19, 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman. She attended St. Paul Lutheran and graduated from Freeman High School in May of 1961. On November 26, 1961, Sandy was united in marriage to Roland Sayler. From this union they were blessed with four sons, Michael, Douglas, Gregory and Christopher. Sandy raised her four boys on the homesteaded farm west of Freeman. She worked outside of the home at Toggery clothing store, Wollman’s and for the longest at Jamboree Foods. She most recently really enjoyed her small home in town which allowed her to take her two walks per day and volunteer at the Et Cetera Shop.

She enjoyed digging in the dirt most whether it was gardening or planting pots and pots of beautiful flowers. She loved to can and pickle her garden harvests; she canned enough quarts of salsa to give her children a year supply. She was most proud of her boys and grandchildren, always very present in their lives. She attended all her grandchildren’s events every chance she got, which kept her very busy. She looked forward to socializing with her Red Hat ladies as well as special trips with her sister-in-laws and dear friends. She enjoyed traveling, using her passport twice in the last three years. She always brought the family together with her gift of hosting family gatherings preparing all her special dishes.

Thankful for having shared her healthy and full life are sons Michael (Tina) of Freeman, Greg (Jen) of New Prague, Minn., Chris (Amber) of Freeman and daughter-in-law Becky Sayler of Flandreau, S.D. She was a devoted grandmother to Nick (Beth), Seth (Marli), Sydney, Bryce, Tiffany, Megan, Hunter, Brayden, Isabel, Ty, Ethan, Jonathan, Zac and Carson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law Martha and Ruben Sayler, husband Roland, beloved son Douglas, brother Rodney Gross, daughter-in-law Candi, sister-in-law Ruth Akins and brothers-in-law Stanley and Ralph Atkins.

A memorial services was held Wednesday Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Reformed Church in Menno, S.D.
