Mr. Wooten, a native of Lenoir County, served as co-captain on the basketball team at Wheat Swamp High School. He served 27 months in the United States Coast Guard from 1953 to 1954. Due to the declining health of his father, he received a hardship discharge to work the family farm. In 1956, he married Phyllis Meiggs and in 1957 was the first to have a pig-pickin. He served as Sunday School Superintendent and Youth Leader at Airy Grove Church.
Mr. Wooten was on the Board of Directors at Farm Credit, was the co-founder of North Lenoir Water Corp, served on the Advisory Board of the Kinston Regional Jetport and while on the board initiated roadside clean-up in Lenoir County, and also served on the Advisory Board of the Little Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Erol and Katie Wooten; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Wooten Christman.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis M. Wooten; children, Teena Wooten Barnett, of Frederick, CO, and E. Scott Wooten and wife, JoElla, of Hookerton; grandchildren, Katie Jo Wooten and Vincent Scott Wooten and fiancé, Kristen Hines; caregiver and friend, Connie Simmons, of Wyse Fork; and many special friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 2600 Rouse Rd., Kinston, NC 28504.
