Loving husband, father, grandfather and brother Stephen Royce Tompkins, age 70, died on Sunday, November 12 at Baylor, Scott and White Hospital in Carrolton, Texas.
Born on April 30, 1947, he was a native of Dallas and lived most of his life in the east Dallas neighborhoods of Casa Linda Forest and Buckner Terrace. He had two careers, first as an educator teaching English at South Oak Cliff High School and developing speed reading curriculum for the Dallas Independent School District, and later as a job placement agent for technical and managerial positions in the electrical engineering and food service industries. Since the 1990s he was an active volunteer with For the Love of the Lake, a community service organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing White Rock Lake for the enjoyment of all. During his many years of involvement with the organization, he served on the board as president and in other leadership roles, and undertook projects such as developing the playground at Tee Pee Hill, installing bilingual signage around the lake, graffiti abatement, refurbishing the lake’s club houses, and lobbying the City of Dallas Park and Recreation department to replace concrete paths around the lake with asphalt to go easier on the knees of avid runners like himself.
Stephen is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Dolores (Lollie) Cuello Tompkins, his daughter Christen Menzel, his grandchildren Jared Menzel and Payton Menzel, all of Dallas, and his daughter Pilar Tompkins Rivas, his son-in-law Adrian Rivas, and grandchildren Nasai Rivas, Evaluna Rivas, and Teófilo Rivas, all of Los Angeles. He is preceded in death by his father Royce Elder Tompkins, his mother Thelma Jean Tompkins, and his sister Diane Cook.
A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Bible Church at 721 Easton Road, Dallas, Texas 75218 on Saturday, November 18 at 2:22 pm.
