Stella Vernon Thacker

Stella was born in 1901 in Maeser on her father's homestead which was across south from the present Uintah High School. She is the oldest child of Andrew Jackson Vernon and Ada Allen Vernon.

Stella married Leslie Price Thacker on September 6, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple and they were the parents of four children: Vivian Thacker, who died at age 15 (March 21, 1939); Dale of Vernal; Doral Leslie (Ted) of Mesa, Arizona; and Royal Thacker, who died a few hours after birth. Mrs. Thacker has 10 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Stella has always been active in the Church. Stella remembers having the distinction of being the first 8-year-old child to be baptized in the new Uintah Stake Tabernacle. In 1909, one day after her eighth birthday, she had the honor of being the first of many hundreds of area children to follow to be baptized in the tabernacle font.

Mrs. Thacker has taught her children and grandchildren to live good lives and make their own happiness. "Happiness does not depend upon what happens outside of you, but what happens inside of you." (Spencer W. Kimball). Stella met the problems of life with good cheer. Her children and great-grandchildren say:

"No greater honor could we pay than for us to say to you, you've set the pattern for our lives, we pledge to carry through."

Poem written in honor of Stella from her husband Leslie Price Thacker

Side By Side
All the problems of life
We have met together,
Through sunshine and sorrow
And all kinds of weather,
All your burdens seem light
That you have in this life
If you have by your side
A sweet, true, loving wife.
