Laura Jean “Laurie” Nelson, 66, formerly of Battle Creek, died peacefully at her home in Grand Rapids, MI on November 12, 2017 after a year long battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her sister, Linda (Leonard) Trudeau of Arizona City, AZ. She was preceded in death by brother, Richard, and parents, Ruth and Reed Nelson. Laura was born in Battle Creek on November 18,1950. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1972. Returning to Battle Creek, Laura was employed by Thayne Art Mart and Kellogg Company as a graphic design artist. She also worked on Scene magazine and freelanced before moving to Grand Rapids in 1993 for a job with RBC Ministries (now Our Daily Bread) until retiring in 2014. Laura was a gifted artist and passionate art aficionado. She fulfilled a dream of having her art “seen” when one of her photographs was accepted into ArtPrize 2017 and displayed at the Women’s City Club venue. She was a co-founder of MANNA, a Grand Rapids based Christian artist group. Her other interests included travel, reading, antiquing, and supporting environmental causes. She was also actively involved with Christ Church. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 17 at Christ Church, 2500 Breton Rd. SE, with visitation one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 am. A funeral service will take place at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek on Monday, November 27 at 11:00 am. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Laura’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan or to Nature Conservancy.
