Gwendolyn Ann (Dix) Schunk, 88, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen. Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, November 18, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Turton, SD. Reverend Michael Kelly and Deacon Gordon Richard officiatee. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Gwendolyn Ann Dix was born July 15, 1929 in Conde to Joseph and Ethel (Klapperich) Dix. She was raised in Turton and graduated from Conde High School. Gwendolyn married Robert Smith in Turton on December 28, 1947. They raised six children and farmed together in the Conde area until Robert passed away in 1976. Gwendolyn later married Carroll Bollerslev in Doland, SD. After his passing, she eventually married William Schunk in Lake Andes, SD.

Gwendolyn was God fearing and was very faithful in her beliefs. She was a great cook and will always be remembered for her delicious pies. Her children remember special treats during hard times on the farm. She would deep fry bread dough and allow the children to add butter and sugar – a treat known to this day as “dough gob.” Gwendolyn enjoyed vegetable gardening but her true passion was bingo! She truly enjoyed every aspect of playing bingo.

Her children will always treasure the special memories made with their mother: Robert (Rhonda) Smith of Greeley, CO; Shirley Smith of Casa Grande, AZ; David (Ali) Smith of Mack’s Creek, MO; Gregory (Teresa) Smith of Kent, WA; Norman (Cindy) Smith of Conde, SD, and Kim Smith of Pierre, SD. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; two stepchildren: John (Darlene) Engellenner and Lee (Claudette) Schunk, all of CA; her brothers: Paul (Theresa) Dix of Georgetown, TX; and Ferdinand (Martha) Dix of Longview, TX; her sisters: Julia Torkelson of Haysville, KS; Rose Peppard of Wichita, KS; Dianne Schneider of Wichita, KS and Yvonne Schipper of Valley Center, KS.

Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her husbands: Robert, Carroll and William; her granddaughter, Tiffany Smith; her brothers: Edward Dix, Earl Dix, Robert Dix, Joseph Dix Jr., Richard Dix; and her sister, Donna Hendren.
