CORTLAND – Victor Richard Stewart, 86, of Cortland, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Windsor House in Champion.

He was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Newville, W.Va., the son of the late Ernest B. and the late Maud Groff Stewart.

Victor was a graduate of Lumberport High School in West Virginia and was employed as a millwright at Republic Steel / LTV for 30 years, retiring in May of 1986.

He was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He enjoyed golfing and fishing; he was an all-around sportsman and he also liked to play computer games.

He had a great appreciation for all of God’s creation; he worked his garden as long as he could. He loved feeding the birds. He enjoyed the beauty and simple abundance all of life had to offer. He was a very good man.

Victor’s memory will be carried on by his wife, Barbara Swartz Stewart, whom he married June 20, 1954; two sons, Ernest B. (Sandy) Stewart II and Leslie W. (Michele) Stewart of Cortland; two daughters, Victoria J. (Bert) Raynor of Neptune, N.J., and Alisa M. Stewart of Warren; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruby Carpenter of Nutter Fort, W.Va.

Besides his parents, Victor was preceded in death by his brother, Buster Stewart; and sister, Lena Griffith.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where the Rev. Denise Gundersen will officiate.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016, and one hour prior to the service Monday, April 18, 2016, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Meadow Brook Memorial Park, Warren.
