Walter was the son of William Cline Hurley and Hazel Mae Cole. He married Betty McConnell in Multnomah, Oregon on his birthday May 11, 1936. He worked at the Oregon ShipYard during WWII on Liberty ships for Henry Kaiser.They relocated to Orcas Island, Washington after their first two children Gerald and Jeanne were born. They had another daughter Maureen and twin sons Patrick and Michael born on St. Pattys Day. He and Betty lived and worked for Moran State Park for 8 years on Orcas. After that in the late 1950's and 60's they owned and operated the Bungalow Restaurant in Eastsound. After retirement and health issues, he and Betty moved to the mainland in Mount Vernon, WA to live near their daughter Jeanne.
