Charles Clifford Herrington was born on April 14, 1922 in King, Texas, a small town in Central Texas, to a grocer named Richmond Anderson Herrington and his wife, Belle Herrington. A U.S. Navy Seabee in WWII, Cliff served in both the Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters, and fittingly passed away on Veterans' Day, November 11, 2017. After returning from the war, he married Carolyn Littrell, who he met through her cousin Bob who was friends with Cliff while in the Navy. Cousin Bob was writing a letter to Carolyn, and Cliff, on impulse - never having seen a photograph, snagged the address and started writing her while overseas. They struck up a blossoming friendship that resulted in Carolyn becoming his lifelong companion of 72 years. Cliff got stateside between tours, and they began a courtship. Gas was rationed at the time, so they walked everywhere they went. Before long the courtship blossomed into love and after another tour of duty, Cliff chased her to Berryville, Arkansas where they were married. They eventually made their home in Olney, Texas where Cliff was a hard-working auto mechanic. The young couple bought a house, had their first child, Jerry; and were living the post WWII American dream. At the same time, they were very involved in First Baptist Church of Olney, deciding early about two things: "We should show up for church every time the doors are open, and we should tithe our income." Over time their deepening affection for Christ led to a dramatic decision to leave their home, quit the business and pursue education in preparation for their call into the ministry. Carolyn had no idea what sort of adventure they were headed into! Along the way, Carolyn faithfully stood with Cliff as he finished high school, college and seminary. And their family continued to grow! Along came number two son, John during the time at Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Seminary. Along came Scott at their first official pastorate in Caps, Texas, followed by Phil in McGregor, Texas. In 1964, Cliff and his family found their true "home" in the City of Conroe, and over time, he became an iconic figure in Montgomery County where he served for 19 years at the First Baptist Church of Conroe, and ultimately retired as Pastor Emeritus in that church family. Cliff was preceded in death by his mother and father, R. A. and Belle Herrington, brother Richmond Herrington, sister Jewel Russell, wife Carolyn and son, Scott Herrington. He is survived by his sons Jerry and wife Linda, John and wife Angela, Phil and wife Anne, eleven grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. The family is deeply indebted to the many friends and family who have demonstrated their affection for him over the years, particularly Karen Blakely, who extravagantly served them most significantly in their last days. Visitation will be held Monday, November 13, 2017 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Cashner Funeral Home. Graveside will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 12:30pm in Conroe Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 2:30pm at First Baptist Church Conroe with a reception following in Herrington Hall.
