US Congressman. He was raised in Connecticut and apprenticed as a printer before moving west to Troy, New York and became editor of the Troy Gazette. He later returned to Connecticut and studied law at Litchfield where he earned a degree. He moved to Steubenville, Ohio, was admitted to the bar in 1809, and began to practice law as an attorney. He was appointed as the United States District Attorney in 1817 and was elected to the 17th United States Congress in 1820 but resigned before his term began. He was elected to Congress again in 1822 to represent Ohio's 11th District in the United States House of Representatives, and served three consecutive terms from 1823 to 1829. He was defeated in 1828 while attempting to run for a fourth term. In 1831, he was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court and served four years until his resignation in 1835. He then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to work in the newspaper business as publisher of the Cincinnati Gazette. He also became director of the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad Company and a founding member of the Cincinnati Law School. He returned to politics in 1861, as a delegate and honorary president of the Peace Congress in Washington D.C. to prevent civil war in the United States. He died during negotiations on February 13th, two months before the peace talks failed and the war began.
