--Son of Marvin Lawrence Gray and wife Lettie Ward. He was raised in Hobbsville, founded by his Hobbs ancestors. He attended Hobbsville Elementary School & Elizabeth City High School, where he was Captain and MVP of the football team, graduating in 1950.
--Graduate of Wake Forest University, where he played football his freshman year before entering the Air Force during the Korean War. He later completed his degree at Wake Forest, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He then enrolled in its law school, graduating in 1960.
--U.S. Air Force Veteran; he served in Berlin.
--He married Carol Hyland, who preceded him in death. He had 2 children, Marvin Jr. and Jane. He had 4 granddaughters.
--Occupation: Attorney and Judge. He began his career with what is now Legal Aid Society. He ws later a partner in the firm of Crews, Meekins, Gordon & Gray, practicing primarily civil trial work. He served on many boards and committees. He was appointed to the Superior Court Bench in 1986 by Governor Martin. He served as judge until retiring on Dec. 31, 2000. He was then appointed Emergency Superior Court Judge by Governor James Hunt, which he served until retiring in 2010.
--He enjoyed genealogy and reading/collecting books on the Civil War, collecting over 200 volumes. He enjoyed college and pro football as well as the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves.
--founding member of Rama Swim & Racquet Club, serving as its first President.
