Lieutenant, C.S.A. The son of future Confederate general Alexander Peter Stewart, Alphonso enlisted in the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, C.S.A. when he was only 15 years old. He was in action at the battle of Saltsville, Virginia, but shortly afterward he was transferred to his father's staff, where he served for the rest of the war. He was admitted to the bar at the age of 19 & practiced law in Tennessee & Mississippi until he moved to St. Louis. He then joined former circuit judge & Missouri congressman Andrew King & former Union cavalry officer John W.
