Rod Bergstrom
AGE: 89 Wilmington
On November 4, 2017, Rod Bergstrom peacefully passed into the waiting arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At that moment he was surrounded by his loving family and the wonderful staff of Westminster Village and Seasons Hospice in Dover, Delaware.
Rod was born in Wilmington in 1928. He grew up near Price Run Pool in Wilmington where he was a lifeguard for several years while attending P.S. DuPont High School. This is where he met Marie Garyantes, the love of his life and future wife.
In 1946 he graduated from P.S. DuPont as the president of his class and its most outstanding athlete. After high school Rod enlisted in the army with his buddies and they served together as paratroopers in the 11th Airborne Division in post WW II occupied Japan.
In 1948 he returned from military service and enrolled in accounting at the University of Delaware where he played football and graduated with honors in 3 years. While attending the university he also married his sweetheart Marie.
Rod was hired by the DuPont Company right out of college eventually becoming one of their first computer programmers. Towards the end of his career he was brought on by the State of Delaware to maintain their mainframe computers. He retired to Florida in 1993.
Rod was preceded in death by his eldest daughter Lynn Marie and his youngest son Gregory Scott. He is survived by Marie, his wife of 68 years; his eldest son Rod Bergstrom, Jr.(Patty) of Alpharetta, GA; his youngest daughter Dawn Ford (Donald) of Townsend, DE; his granddaughter Sarah Shea (Colin); his grandson Donald Ford (Paige); and his granddaughter Rachel Blair (Zeke).
Private interment will be held at the Delaware Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you consider a donation to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
