Velma Louise Benton was born January 3, 1925, in Peace Valley, Missouri. She was the daughter of Roy and Gladys (Gilliam) Benton. Velma attended school in Peace Valley. In 1941, she moved with her family to Sac City and then the Pocahontas area. She worked as a "hired girl" for a farm family doing housework, cooking, cleaning and canning. She graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1942. She worked as a bookkeeper for C & C Motor Co. On May 19, 1947, Velma married Verle Howard at the United Methodist Church in Rolfe. To this union six children were born. The couple lived in Pocahontas and then Thor. In 1953, they moved to the Philippines and then Tangier, Morocco where Verle was a power plant supervisor. In 1962, Verle and Velma settled near Rolfe where they farmed and raised their family. Velma was a homemaker and she worked as a cook at the Pocahontas Manor for several years. In 1998, the couple moved into Rolfe. Verle passed away in 2009 and Velma continued to make her home in Rolfe.
Velma was a member of the Shared Ministry Church of Rolfe. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, quilting, traveling as well as gardening and reading.
Survivors include her daughters, Hope (Brian) Hutchins of Carson City, NV; Kelly (Dale) Hartman of Britt and Karen (Carl) Leyba of Thermopolis, WY; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and two on the way; daughters-in-law, Gail (Rich) Seeger of Riverside, IL; and Mary Howard of New Hope, MN and many nieces & nephews.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verle; sons, Randy and Monte; a daughter, Joy Hayes; son-in-law, Terry Hayes and sister Betty Jean Keleher Rund.
