Her celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the First Christian Church in Gibson City. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Private burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery in Gibson City.
Charlene was born July 16, 1922, in Gibson City, a daughter of Oliver and Emma (Gilmore) Shirley. She married Leonard L. Bennett on Nov. 26, 1947, in Danville.
Surviving are her children, Bob (Barb) Bennett of Urbana, Wanda Driscoll of Greeley, Colo., Carol (Jerry) Bennett-Barker of Peoria, Tom (Kathy) Bennett of Gibson City and Doug (Sheila) Bennett of Gibson City; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Shirley.
Charlene was educated at the Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse, Drummer Township High School (valedictorian of the Class of 1940) and then received her teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University. She taught school at Wantwood Country Schoolhouse and at Busy Hands Nursery School for over 20 years.
She loved to play the piano and tend her garden at her family's farm. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Gibson City and taught Sunday school and helped with the children's choir for many years. She was also a member of the Gibson Area Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy was time spent with her family.
Memorial tributes may be made to the First Christian Church of Gibson City.
Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
