The marker also states that she is the wife of N.B. Bateman, but following Dr. Needham Bryant Bateman's death in August of 1935, Maude later remarried William Hall Avant.

Mrs. Avant was born May 5, 1874 in Washington County and was before her marriage Miss Maude Vester Veal, daughter of the late William Hilliard Veal and the late Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gregory Veal. She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church, the Smyrna WMU and The WSCW of The Deepstep Methodist Church. She was a member of the Home Economics Club.
After the death of Needham B. Bateman, later she was married to the late W.H. Avant.
