The grave stone indicates her birth year as 1884, however her obituary states 1874. According to the reconstructed 1890 census by The Brantley Association, Maude was 6 years old in 1890, proving the date on the grave stone as the correct year of her birth. The marker also states that she is the wife of N.B. Bateman, but following Dr. Needham Bryant Bateman's death in August of 1935, Maude later remarried William Hall Avant.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Bateman Avant, of Deepstep, who died Tuesday, April 23 at the residence of her son, Dr. Osgood Bateman on Warthen Street, Sandersville, were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 in the Deepstep Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Robinson, pastor of Smyrna Baptist Church, the Rev. E.G. Hutchings, Atlanta, and the Rev. Loy G. Veal, Savannah, officiating. Interment followed in Deepstep Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Avant was born May 5, 1874 in Washington County and was before her marriage Miss Maude Vester Veal, daughter of the late William Hilliard Veal and the late Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gregory Veal. She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church, the Smyrna WMU and The WSCW of The Deepstep Methodist Church. She was a member of the Home Economics Club.
After the death of Needham B. Bateman, later she was married to the late W.H. Avant.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Needham B. Bateman, Atlanta, Dr. Osgood Bateman, Sandersville, daughter, Mrs. Troy Edwards, Eatonton; daughters-in-law, Mrs. W.H. Bateman, Forest Park, Mrs. Gregory Bateman, Atlanta; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Mrs. E.G. Hutchings, Deepstep; brothers, Alonza G. Veal, Frank Veal, both of Deepstep; step-daughters, Mrs. V.I. McAfee, Deepstep, Mrs. R.T. Winn and Mrs. Esterben Ward, Atlanta; stepsons, Carwin F. Avant, Sandersville, David M. Avant, Deepstep, W. Wade Avant, Macon, Byron Avant, Atlanta; several nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and other relatives.
Serving as casket bearers were David Avant, Carwin F. Avant, Giles Gladin, Wilmer Giles, Hilliard Veal, T. Jeff Veal, Jr. Veron Veal, Alonza Hutchings.
Mayo Funeral Home of Sandersville was in charge of the arrangements.
