A 38-year-old Midland man died after the car he was driving went off the road and hit a tree in Homer Township on Tuesday night. The Midland County Sheriff’s Office reports Robert Altman was driving a blue 2007 Dodge Caliber east on East Olson Road when the car went off the road to the left, struck a mailbox and then a tree near Rustic Drive about 8:40 p.m.

Altman was taken to the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland for treatment, but later was pronounced dead.

Olson Road was closed between Five Mile and Homer roads from 9 p.m. until just before midnight for accident reconstruction. Altman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and his vehicle’s side impact airbags had deployed, a media release states.

As is normal in all fatal accidents, deputies are waiting for toxicology reports. The final report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by MidMichigan Medical Center EMC and Homer Township Fire Rescue.
