Lewis R. Van­Aken, Newfoundland, died Monday at home. His wife is Sally Craft VanAken. The couple celebrated 31 years of marriage in August.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late Lewis and Mary Cielinski VanAken, he was of the Catholic faith. He was an Army veteran and served with the New York Air National Guard. Before his retirement, he was a member of the Yonkers Fire Department Local 628, where he was at the department for 21 years.

Lewis enjoyed woodworking, antique cars, models, architecture, fishing, camping boating and cooking.

He was a loving, kind and strong-willed husband, father, grandfather and an honorable friend.

Also surviving are his children, Lewis R. VanAken Jr. and wife, Annete; Lisa Linton; and Jodi Wagner and husband, William; grandchildren, William C. Wagner, Kori L. Wagner; Kally R. Mayle and husband, Mark; Matthew K. Linton and wife, Cyndi; and Jordan A. VanAken; and great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Charlee Mayle.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela VanAken; and a daughter, Amanda L. VanAken.

The funeral will be Friday at noon in the Frey-Fetsock Funeral Home Inc., 201 Route 191, South Sterling. Interment, Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling.
