Louise Esther Mann, born Louise Esther Bates, passed away peacefully December 20, 2015, at Hillside Terrace Retirement Community in Ann Arbor.

Louise Bates was born ninety six years ago on October 25, 1919 at the family farm, in Scio Township, boarding the village of Dexter, which her great-grandfather Vrelon Bates purchased in 1827. She was the second of seven children of H. Carl Bates and Ruby Estella Ott Bates. She began school at four years of age so that her older sister Dorothy would not have to walk alone the five mile round trip to school and back. Louise graduated from Dexter high school in 1936 at the age of 16. Louise's first job was as a switch board operator for the Bell Telephone Company in Dexter, she then later transferred to the Ann Arbor office where she met her future husband Eugene Mann. They were married October 16, 1942, in Dexter at the Methodist Church, and spent the next sixty eight years together until Gene's death in 2011.

After raising her four children, she began working at the University of Michigan Athletic department where for the next twenty four years she became the friendly face at the ticket window. Louise was a devoted Michigan fan treasuring the interactions with the players from Cazzie Russell to Jim Harbaugh. Throughout her life Louise enjoyed knitting countless item for her family, participating in Eastern Star, playing Euchre, Michigan athletics, traveling the world with her sisters, and especially summers at the family cottage on Pleasant Lake. Louise was a member of St John's Lutheran Church in Bridgewater.

Survivors included her four children; Juliane (Gary) Rupp, John (June) Mann, Robert Mann, and Barbara Mann, five grandchildren; Erin (Nick) Garcia, Jonathan (Carrie) Rupp, Greg (Sarah) Rupp, Suzy Rupp and Cory (Jill) Mann. Survivors also include ten great-grandchildren, three sisters; Jeannette Bates Turner, Helen Bates Stewart, Carolyn Bates Toney, one brother William Bates and many nieces and nephews.
