Harry J. Rockafeller, a son of John and Susan (McQuade) Rockafeller, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 24, 1866. The family eventually moved to Asbury Park, NJ and he was a graduate of Asbury Park HS. From 1889 to 1891 he was associated with his father in the management of the Sunset Hall hotel. He became proprietor of the Gramercy, which he ran for four seasons and in 1901 he again took charge of Sunset Hall. He also owned and managed numerous local theaters and was an owner of a large percentage of the local electric light plant.

He was a member of the Republican party and was elected a Monmouth County Freeholder for many terms.

He was married on October 22, 1890, to Katharine (Kate) McCabe, of a prominent Newark family. They had four boys: John, Eugene, Harry and Thomas.
