William was the son of John and Susan Hobart Hotchkiss of New York and had siblings: John, Charles, and Luella. He was married to Angeline Kinne, the daughter of Charles Babcock and Catherine Eckert Kinne, about 1877, and was the parent of one child, Arthur Clarence(1879-1959). In 1870, the John Hotchkiss family was living in Hancock, New York and by 1880, William was in Greenbush, Alcona County. William was a veterinary surgeon. He died when he drank chloroform instead of alcohol. Angeline went back to Sullivan County, New York, after William's death and lived with her younger brother, Joseph, dying sometime after 1940. Arthur went to San Joaquin, California.
