Mr. James T. “Sid” Couey, age 82, of Ailey, died Monday, November 6, 2017, in Serenity Hospice House in Dublin, after an extended illness. He was a native of Wheeler County, was a 1953 graduate of Glenwood High School, and served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman. He attended Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon where he played baseball, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation and Physical Education from Georgia Southern Statesboro. In 1959, he moved to Lake Worth, Florida and worked with Pratt and Whitney, and has lived in Ailey since 1971. He worked with Piggly Wiggly Southern for several years, and retired from the State of Georgia as a parole officer. He was a charter member, Deacon, and former Treasurer of the College Hill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. He enjoyed sports, and coached baseball at Brewton-Parker College. He enjoyed quail hunting, bass fishing, and was a prolific shark tooth hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barkwell and Cora Butler Couey; and a brother, William Couey.


Mr. Couey is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara Peterson Couey of Ailey; three children, Kathy Couey Jones and husband Lance of Dublin, Bryan Couey and wife Erika of Ringgold, and Paul Couey and husband Pete of San Francisco, California; one sister, JoAnn Pickle and husband Sonny of Americus; two brothers, John “Cap” Couey and wife Faye of the Landsburg Community in Wheeler County, and Tony Couey and wife Mary Jo of Birmingham, Alabama; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.


The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 8th at 11:00 a.m. in the College Hill Baptist Church with Reverend Randall Gibbs and Reverend Wayne Durden officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00.


Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may make memorial contributions to the College Hill Baptist Church, or Brewton-Parker College.
