US Astronaut. He flew on both the Gemini 11 mission in September of 1966 and the Apollo 12 mission in November of 1969 where he was the pilot of the Command Module. He entered naval aviation training after graduating from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1951. Six years later he became a test pilot, and in 1961 he won the Bendix Trophy Race, piloting an F4H Phantom jet from Los Angeles to New York City in the record time of two hours and 47 minutes. In 1963 he was chosen to be an astronaut and three years later, he made his first space mission with fellow astronaut Charles Conrad. During this flight, they docked with an Agena target on the first orbit and were propelled together to a record altitude of 850 miles . They also made a 45 minute space walk. In November of 1969, he made his second space flight with Apollo 12. During this mission, he was the pilot of the Command Module and stayed in orbit while his fellow astronauts Alan L. Bean and Charles Conrad went down to walk on the Moon's surface. He retired from both the United States Navy and the space program in 1972. He later served as executive vice president of the National Football League's New Orleans Saints from 1972 to 1977. He would go on to be active in other business interests.
