MIDDLETOWN—John E. Hatfield, 82, Rt. 1, died early Saturday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following a brief illness.

He was born in Sneedville, Tenn., and retired in 1966 from Delco Remy. He was a retired farmer. He was a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, member of UAW Local 662 of Anderson and the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Belle Elizabeth Hatfield; three sons, Glen Hatfield of Milroy, Lowell Hatfield of Vacaville, Calif., and Larry Hatfield of New Castle, Calif.; one daughter, Nina Lee Wright of Anderson; three sisters, Lydia Hatfield of Sneedville, Tenn., Jess Isom of Knoxville, Tenn., and Edna Lewis of Morristown, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown with Mike Scott of the Middletown Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be at Anderson Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
