Civil War Union Major General. Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy & was commissioned in the 1st Dragoons. For the next 23 years, he served with the 1st Dragoons throughout the west. Smith resigned his colonelcy of the 2d California Cavalry to become chief of cavalry under General Halleck. He was made a brigadier general of volunteers & was promoted to major general in 1864. He commanded one of General Sherman's divisions at Chickasaw Bayou in 1862 & a division of the XIII Corps. With postwar reductions in the army, he resumed his Regular Army rank of colonel & commanded the 7th United States Cavalry. After resigning from the army in 1869, Smith moved to St. Louis to take an appointment from President Grant as postmaster. He served as the city's auditor & commanded a brigade of Missouri militia during the strikes of 1877.
