US Congressman. Born in Holly, New York, he moved to Iowa and established the Gazette in Cedar Falls, in 1860. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B, 31st Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he engaged as agent of the Northwestern Associated Press, then moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1869 and became editor of the Sioux City Journal. He was member of the Iowa State Senate (1874-76), commissioner of immigration for the State of Iowa (1880-82) and appointed United States marshal for the northern district of Iowa by President Arthur, serving 1883-85. In 1891, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1899. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his journalistic activities as editor and publisher of the Sioux City Journal. He died at age 73 in to Sioux City, Iowa.
