Veteran of the Civil War and leading member of the legal profession. During the Civil War he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 9th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. In 1871 he was elected as a member of the Constitutional Convention. The following year he was chosen to complete an unexpired term in the State Senate, and in 1875 he was elected a member of the Constitutional Convention. In 1876 was elected as the first lieutenant-governor of Nebraska.
