After finishing school, Nathan started farming. He also logged and did various construction jobs. Nathan worked for Wicks Construction and the Winneshiek County Coop. He owned and operated Dawley Trucking for the last 10 years, while continuing to farm through it all. Nathan loved working with his Percheron horses and teaching his children and many friends how to drive horses. He also enjoyed going on trail rides with groups of people. Nathan also loved working with his honeybees and bee keeping with his Amish friends. He was a coon hunter and had many great stories of his adventures with friends.

Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, teaching his daughter Lydia how to drive and his son Zachery about horses.
