According to the book Birthrights by William Harold Hunt, Joseph's parents were suspected to have been William Hunt 1744-1821 and Mary Waters.

In 2021, a letter was discovered in the records of the author of Birthrights, William Harold Hunt. The letter was dated 11 Feb 1925. It was written by Bridget (Hargaden) Casserly to William Harold Hunt. Bridget was the daughter of Edward Hargaden and Letitia Hunt of Curraun, Mohill.

In the letter she states, " I wanted to see my Uncle William [Hunt] or my aunt Catherine [McKiernan] to inquire of them what relation was between Robert Hunt's family & ours. I was speaking to my aunt about it & she told me that my grandfather George Hunt & Christie Hunt were first cousins."

Note: William Hunt was the son of George Hunt and Rose Fitzpatrick. Catherine (Hunt) McKiernan was the daughter of George Hunt and Rose Fitzpatrick. Robert Hunt was a son of Christopher "Christie" Hunt and Sarah Thompson.

Joseph was raised in the Church of Ireland religion. Joseph's son George converted to Catholic. As a result Joseph is buried in the Mohill Cemetery and not St. Mary's. Research and DNA testing indicates that Joseph's daughter Catherine Hunt who married John Reilly/O'Reilly also converted to Catholic since one of her children was baptized in St. Patrick's Mohill.

Joseph is listed in a newspaper article as a tenant of Morgan Crofton from Mohill in the Barony of Leitrim. The Dublin Evening Post 16 June, 1796.

Joseph is listed in the 1796 Irish flax growers list for Mohill.
